The Venice Theater recently announced that it has hired Benny Sato Ambush as its artistic director. Ambush is a seasoned director of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (DEZA), institutional theater director, educator, published commentator and consultant. He was the artistic director of three theaters, two of which were professional, and held positions at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, Providence. RIs Rites and Reason Theater Company, Florida Stage, and Anna Deavere Smith’s Institute for Arts & Civic Dialogue at Harvard University. He has also been a panelist and peer site evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and several state arts councils. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts and Dramatic Literature from Brown University and an MFA in Directing from the University of California at San Diego. In 2020 he was inducted into the College of Fellows at the American Theater. Ambush will begin his tenure with the Venice Theater in late July this year.
