Simple Syrup Recipe - Easy How To

Simple syrup is easy to make. It involves a tiny bit of cooking, but it’s so easy you could do it on a hotplate. If you’ve ever boiled water, you were halfway there.

Make your own simple syrup!

Good simple syrup can be purchased at the grocery store. Unlike sour mix, bottled simple syrup doesn’t get complaints about flavor. The homemade simple syrup won’t necessarily taste better.

But it’s quick, easy and cheap to make it yourself. It’s a lot like making lemonade. In a glass jar, the bottle will keep for one month. And here’s the most exciting part: you can make flavored simple syrup.

Non-stop for cocktails

You may think mainly of simple syrup for cocktails, but it’s a great sweetener for lots of other things. It’s perfect for turning unsweetened iced tea into sweet tea at the table.

It’s also delicious for sweetening iced coffee. It can also be substituted for corn syrup in some recipes. Just don’t substitute it for dry sugar in baking because that might not work.

HowUse homemade simple syrup to enhance the flavor

There are several ways to flavor your syrup.

  • Infuse herbs or citrus zest with the mixture to enhance their flavor. You can also add rosemary, ginger root and mint to your dish.
  • Cook fruit in with it – berries, orange slices, pieces of apple, and more. To remove any seeds or peels, you may have to strain it.
  • You can add a drop of extract to your recipe. Vanilla, rum, mint, coconut, cinnamon, etc.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar (any kind, even brown)

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar and water in a saucepan on medium heat
  2. Bring it to a simmer and stir the sugar in.
  3. Let it cool.
  4. Place it in a glass container that is sealed tightly.

Notes

You can refrigerate it for up to a month.
