A mid-century modern icon in a desirable Tampa neighborhood

Listing of the day

Place: Tampa, Florida
Price: $ 1.4 million

This mid-century modern icon features walled grounds for privacy, a pool, separate single-story casita ideal for in-laws or teenagers, and a central location in a sought-after South Tampa neighborhood.

Parkland Estates is known for its “lot size lots and a coveted high school district,” said listing agent Karla Dorsey. “This is a big deal for a lot of people.”

As soon as you walk through the front door of this house, “you feel like you are in a private oasis,” she said. “You are entering a different space and time in your own private world.”

The house was built as a private home in 1964 by local architect Demetrios Athan.

The architect is known for his angular designs, said Ms. Dorsey. “It is certainly a landmark in Tampa.”

The family room has an unusual and well-lit angular window overlooking the street.

There are several other buildings in Tampa that Athan designed, including the First National Bank, which has since been demolished.

The owners did a major renovation in 2014 and even traveled to Palm Springs, California, known for its classic mid-century modern homes.

They made “some really nice commercial upgrades to the house,” said Ms. Dorsey, including all of the new windows and doors in the main two story house.

The new kitchen has Viking appliances, quartz counters, double sinks, and sliding glass windows that open to the pool.

Other architectural and design details include a well-insulated block construction, a floating staircase with an original powder-coated steel railing, custom-made soft-close cabinets, large cabinets, ceramic tile floors, an indoor and outdoor sound system as well as a reverse osmosis water filter and softening systems.

The renovation also brought a more open floor plan to the master suite on the second floor. It has a wraparound balcony overlooking the pool and the sculpture garden, a reading room, a large closet with an island, a Keurig coffee station and a free-floating bathtub.

The second bedroom with bathroom in the main house is currently used as an office.

The three bedroom casita is ideal for in-laws or a teenage retreat, Ms. Dorsey said. “It is a very independent space.”

One of the bedrooms in the casita is used as a gym, and there is also a TV room and office.

Neighborhood notes

The house is very central with easy access to the airport, said Ms. Dorsey. “It’s only a 10-minute drive from the airport and you are very close to restaurants” with lots of restaurants and boutiques.

“It’s such an unusual home and you’re in the heart of South Tampa,” she said. “It’s an extremely desirable place.”
